Silverer | Data Poisoning

Silverer is a ‘data poisoning’ tool under development, which among its broad applications, can disrupt criminal production of AI-generated child abuse material, extremist technology propaganda, and deepfake images and videos.

It will enable every-day users to protect their data by altering the data of original images or videos before uploading them to internet and social media. This will make it more difficult for criminals to misuse them through the production and manipulation of AI programs. Silverer does this by creating reflections of an original image or video – with its name a nod to the silver used to make mirrors – to alter its pixels and trick AI models to generate low-quality, covered in blurry patterns, or completely unrecognisable images and videos.

The corrupted results will make it a lot easier to spot a doctored image or video created by criminals, and can reduce the volume of fake explicit material investigators have to go through by slowing and stopping criminal production of such content. This will also allow police to focus on identifying and removing real children from harm. The same application can also be used to reduce fake celebrity endorsements that provide credibility for scams and save Australians from losing money to investment scams.
