Our story

Hello! We’re AiLECS Lab (pronounced Alex) – Ai for Law Enforcement and Community Safety.

We’re a collaboration between the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and Monash University, which first started to accelerate digital forensics and help counter online child exploitation.

AiLECS Lab achieved Research Centre Status in 2023. Since then, we continuously evaluate, research and develop artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to help disrupt crime.

Two things centre everything we do – ethics and community safety.

Our principles

  • ETHICAL

We develop ethical guidelines to ensure the implementation and use of AI is transparent and consensual when it comes to privacy, security and community safety.

  • EXPLAINABLE

We make sure that throughout the end-to-end lifecycle of AI being used within law enforcement for community safety - from data collection, to storage, training and operation - that its technique is transparent and can be explained when pursuing criminal justice against the highest standard of proof.

  • EFFECTIVE

We develop proof of concepts against real-world use cases that can be piloted and implemented for use within law enforcement operating environments.
