Our story
Hello! We’re AiLECS Lab – Ai for Law Enforcement and Community Safety.
We started as a collaboration between the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and Monash University to accelerate digital forensics and help counter online child exploitation.
Since then, we’ve evolved into a research laboratory that tests and brings artificial intelligence (AI) proof of concept solutions to life across different crime types and challenges – ready to be piloted and deployed to help law enforcement agencies identify, prevent, deter and disrupt crime.
Two things centre everything we do – ethics and community safety.
Our principles
-
ETHICAL
We develop ethical guidelines to ensure the implementation and use of AI is transparent and consensual when it comes to privacy, security and community safety.
-
EXPLAINABLE
We make sure that throughout the end-to-end lifecycle of AI being used within law enforcement for community safety - from data collection, to storage, training and operation - that its technique is transparent and can be explained when pursuing criminal justice against the highest standard of proof.
-
EFFECTIVE
We develop proof of concepts against real-world use cases that can be piloted and implemented for use within law enforcement operating environments.
